We’re in the final stretch of the year, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably juggling a million things while planning your next big move.

But before you dive headfirst into the next shiny opportunity, let’s take a breath and get strategic.

How do you choose where to focus your efforts when it comes to your content? Should you spread yourself thin across every platform out there?

Spoiler: No, you shouldn’t.

Let’s be honest, by now you should know my MO. Working smarter, being more efficient.

During our last week of Summer School I talked about showing up online as a personal brand (missed out? Check our Autumn programming here).

As always, I wanted to simplify things. As I mentioned during class, each platform falls into one of two categories:

  1. Pull Platforms

  2. Push Platforms

Both are important, but they serve very different purposes. So, let’s break them down…

👩‍🏫 Lesson of the week

Push Platforms are where new audiences can stumble across your content—they’re your audition stages. Pull Platforms give you a direct line to your audience, where you can nurture and grow those relationships.

Push Platforms

Push Platforms are where people discover you. They’re built to pull in attention and keep users engaged—think social media and search engines like Google and YouTube.

These platforms are designed to push content to as many eyeballs as possible. The longer they keep users on the platform, the more ads they can serve. Your content is part of that attention-grabbing game—if it’s good enough to stop someone mid-scroll, the platform rewards you by pushing it to more people.

Create something that grabs attention, and your reach expands. You might even go viral, landing in front of new potential followers. But don’t get too comfortable—this is where the illusion of distribution comes into play.

Even if people follow you, there’s no guarantee they’ll see your next post. The platform is in control, and you’re just borrowing that visibility.

That said, Push Platforms are invaluable for getting your name out there. Just remember, the reach isn’t truly yours.

Pull Platforms

Pull Platforms are all about control. This is where you own the communication. Some people like to say you “own your audience” here, but let’s be honest—you don’t own people. You own the right to communicate with them (for as long as they let you).

Pull Platforms include things like email, podcasts, SMS, and private communities. These platforms give you a reliable, direct connection to your audience—no algorithms deciding whether your message gets through.

The barrier to entry is higher. Clicking “follow” is easy, but handing over personal contact information? That requires trust. And once you have that trust, these platforms are where real relationships flourish. It’s here that you turn followers into loyal fans who actively engage with what you have to offer.

Whether you should focus on Push or Pull platforms depends on what you’re aiming to achieve right now.

So, How Do I Prioritise?

If growth and visibility are your top priorities, then Push Platforms are where you should be spending your time.

If you need to get your name out there, build awareness, and attract new followers, Push Platforms are your go-to. It’s about making that first impression and getting in front of fresh eyes. Just remember, the reach isn’t yours to keep, so don’t rely on them exclusively.

If nurturing relationships and building long-term loyalty are key goals for you, then Pull Platforms are your best bet. These platforms allow you to deepen connections with the people who have already shown interest in what you’re doing.

If you want to build a community that sticks around and engages with your content over time, this is where the real magic happens. Invest in Pull Platforms when you’re ready to focus on sustainability and retention.

🏫 Class in session

Talking about push and pull, let me share with you a very exclusive Summer School replay (currently ONLY available for members of our all-access pass) with Areej AbuAli.

A fabulous conversation all about building amazing communities - which to me are the ultimate pull platforms.

Ultimately, both Push and Pull platforms have their place. The trick is to balance them based on your current goals.

If you’re growing, lean into Push. If you’re nurturing, dive into Pull.

And if you’re doing both? Well, it’s all about finding that sweet spot between attracting new faces and taking care of the ones already in your corner.

Always cheering you on,

Fab ✌️
