👩‍🏫 Lesson of the week

We are digging deeper this week. These strengths help you live with balance, fairness, and a deeper connection to the world around you.

They’re really at the core of leadership practices - they guide your decisions, keep you grounded, and help you find meaning in both the big and small moments of life.

Virtue #4: Justice

Justice is more than just fairness. It’s about doing what’s right, even when no one’s watching. Justice is about creating balance in your relationships, communities, and actions, and it starts with the small choices you make every day.

Here’s how Justice plays out in your life, and how you can sharpen it:

  • Teamwork: You’re the person who believes in collaboration, not competition. Whether at work, in your community, or just in daily life, you know that we’re stronger together.

  • Fairness: Being fair means treating everyone equally, no matter who they are. It’s about leaving biases at the door and making sure decisions are just and balanced.

  • Leadership: Leadership itself enters the chat. In this case, it’s about guiding others, setting an example, and inspiring people to do the right thing. True leadership happens when you lead with fairness, empathy, and integrity.

Virtue #5: Temperance

Temperance is the art of knowing when to go full throttle and when to pull back. Some virtue I definitely need to work every single week!

It’s about balance - whether that’s in your emotions, actions, or habits. It helps you stay centred, calm, and in control, even when life tries to knock you off course. Temperance gives you the quiet strength to regulate your impulses, forgive yourself and others, and stay humble in your success.

  • Forgiveness: Forgiveness when it comes to virtues is really about letting go of the hurt and choosing to move forward without the weight of resentment.

  • Humility: Humility is about letting your actions speak for themselves. It’s knowing that you don’t need to be loud or boastful to show your worth as your work does that for you.

  • Self-Regulation: This is where your inner discipline comes into play (definitely a challenge for me!) controlling impulses, emotions, or behaviours that might steer you off track. It’s all about moderation and knowing when to rein it in.

  • Foresight: Foresight is all about being cautious and thinking ahead. This can be challenging if you are a human living with anxiety, but truly, it’s about preparing wisely for what might come next.

Virtue #6: Transcendence

Transcendence is all about stepping out of the grind and seeing the magic around you. It’s that next-level stuff. Think about finding beauty in the small moments, feeling hope when things get rough, and connecting with something bigger than the everyday hustle. These strengths lift you up, helping you stay grounded while reaching for the stars.

  • Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence: It’s noticing the stuff that makes you go “wow” It can be a killer sunset, an amazing playlist, or a perfectly brewed coffee (that would do it for me!). Finding awe in the details makes life richer.

  • Gratitude: Gratitude is your secret sauce for happiness. When you take a sec to focus on what’s already good in your life, it creates room for even more good things to show up.

  • Hope: Hope is that feeling that, no matter what, things are going to get better. It’s the vision that keeps you moving, even when life’s being difficult.

  • Humour: If you’re not laughing, what’s the point? Humour is how you roll with life’s punches and keep your spirit light, even when the day throws you a curveball.

  • Spirituality: Spirituality is about finding meaning. Whether that’s through faith, purpose, or simply feeling connected to something bigger than yourself. It’s what helps you stay grounded when things feel a little chaotic.

Ready to take these virtues and refine them? Here are a few things you can do:

  1. Fairness: The next time you’re faced with a decision that affects others, pause and ask yourself, “Am I treating everyone fairly here?” It’s a simple check-in, but it can make all the difference in how you approach situations.

  2. Leadership: Take on a small leadership role this week. Whether it’s initiating a conversation, guiding a project, or mentoring someone, lead by example. Show what it means to be a fair and just leader.

  3. Self-Regulation: Pick one small habit today that you want to adjust. Whether it’s reducing screen time, cutting back on snacking, or setting a limit on work hours. Practising small acts of self-control will build your strength over time.

  4. Foresight: Before your next big decision, take a few minutes to consider the possible outcomes. Where could things go right or wrong? A little foresight goes a long way in making smarter choices.

  5. Beauty: Take five minutes today to stop and really see something beautiful around you. That perfect cup of tea, a vibrant flower, or even your pet doing something ridiculous. Let the little things fill you with a little wonder.
